"NILKON and VELAJ – when art joins people"

March, 2019

I just happily finished reading the Arabic version of Fate Velaj's wonderful work; "NILKON - when Danube met Nil"'; which is a real, magnificent piece of art. In fact, at several points during my journey of reading this masterpiece, I wished that that book would never end, lest I should lose and miss that huge amount of ecstasy, pleasure and excitement that I have usually got from reading that book, since I began reading the first page till I put it down after finishing the last line in the last page.

In my opinion, the secret that has given that book its uniqueness lies in its mysterious nature and its individual literary form. It is really hard to classify this book and find its right place under the right genre of literature. You, as a reader, will sometimes feel you are reading a superabundant, gripping autobiography about a certain period in the life of a passionate, enthusiastic artist and exhibitions curator. And at some other times, when you go through the amazing, witty, observant descriptions for people and places mentioned in the book (Vienna, Brussels, Skopje and Cairo after 9.11.2001 in New York), you become extremely sure that you are holding in your hands a great novel that was efficiently woven and professionally crafted through the pen of a genuine,  capable novelist. So it is a kind of a new form of literature which is neither a pure fiction (a novel) nor mere nonfiction (an autobiography. Our distinguished man has made this book of his own recipe and ingredients.

Moreover, Velaj's "NILKON" can not only be viewed as an autobiography or a novel, but it can also be regarded as a book that flawlessly belongs to the Travel Literature. Solidly, "NILKON" can be seen as if it were written by one of the world's most famous globetrotters, who is now and here in "NILKON", Fate Velaj. It's quite obvious that Velaj's has taken his lucky readers with him in all his journeys to see all the places, cities countries that he had visited in the period of time told in the book. Fate Velaj extensively gave us detailed descriptions about those people's looks, manners, habits, cultures and traditions. You can safely cofirm after reading the book that Velaj is one of the world's greatest and most passionate travellers who is never timid while being in other countries with people of different cultures.

In addition, there is still one of the most important remarks about "NILKON" which I would never wish to miss here, in this review, is that you can easily feel its author's great sense of humor in nearly every page. You can encounter this point either through his comments on a certain behavior or looks of some of the people he meets in the book or when he refers to something he sees or hears that he has no direct, clear or convincing explanation for.

I should also like to refer to the style used by Velaj in writing this book. His sentences were graceful. His choice of words was perfect. The rhythm was fantastic that you never get bored, but always trying to keep pace with the fast, consequent course of the events.

Last but not least, I cannot end this review without giving  Fate Velaj his deseved credit as a wonderful writer, a smart politician, and a wonderful, faithful person. Fate is always open to others and is always ready to listen to other people of different cultures or religions and he is tolerant and understanding, he never underestimates other people/s opinion. He listens more than he speaks, so he is wise and open minded, and this is the essence of the soul of a true artist. He is never judgemental. He is extremely sociable; enthusiastic, dedicated, passionate, active and ambitious.

On the other hand, it is crucial to refer to an issue of great importance here, away from talking about the form, the style, the genre or the language of the book (Fate Velaj its an painter, photographer, writter, curator and politician) I should greatly like to talk about the purpose and main theme of the book.  I, personally, should like to praise this great initiative of our great writer who introduced Egypt and the Egyptians to Europe and the European reader in a profoundly respected way. This man is a messenger of peace. He exerts tireless efforts to build bridges of love, peace and understanding between the peoples in different countries. Velaj really has a message that evidently exists in his book. This man really loves us as Egyptians. He has been so fair to us. He has opened his heart and mind for the Egyptians. He listened to them carefully. He heartily cooperated with them and loved them; maybe that's why all the Egyptian characters in the book loved him too. They all trusted him and invited him to their homes. Velaj has a marvelous method in attracting the hearts of people to him. This was really due to his sincerity, truthfulness and simplicity.  Frankly speaking, if our Ministry of Foreign Affairs worked 24/7 for years and years, and if our Egypt State Information Service (SIS) published thousands of its promotional publications to show the real pretty face of Egypt, I am sure, they would never reach this highest unattainable success of Velaj's novel in addressing the West and telling them about Egypt and the Egyptians. Thank you Velaj, we, all as Egyptians are so indebted to you for this book which you wrote with a heart full of love to Egypt and the Egyptian. If I may ask for something, I would ask our Minister of Interior to grant Fate Velaj, the author of this book, the Egyptian Nationality for the great services he passionately rendered to our country.

I was lucky to meet Mr. Fate Velaj for the first time when he paid a courtesy visit to Cairo Governorate headquarters in February 2019 so as to meet the Governor of Cairo. I had already read a lot about Mr. Velaj, as a great artist before meeting him, but meeting him in flesh and blood and seeing him closely was an amazing unforgettable moment in my life. I instantaneously became one of his millions admirers and fans. For me, he was the true embodiment of the perfect artist, both personally and professionally. He is modest, easygoing, thoughtful, kind, energetic, art appreciator, highly cultured, avid reader, philosopher a voyager and so many other distinguished qualities.

Regardless of my great love to both the book and its author, and out of my love and respect to Velaj, I should point to an important, crucial element that the book badly misses, which is the serious lack of providing any photos or illustrations to sustain the course of the events. I cannot imagine how such a book, which has been written by a famous painter and a great photographer, who knows well the what a photo can do, and who has been carrying his camera on his shoulder all the time, as he mentioned in the book, to take photos of all the places he had been to, neglects supporting his words with photos of the people he met or the places he had been to. This issue really has disappointed me. We all understand the great role these photos would have played if they had been there side by side with the words. So, I hope Velaj will kindly reconsider this issue, and would kindly take my suggestion into his kind consideration in the next editions of this successful book, unless he has done this intentionally for reasons he only knows.

In a nutshell, I see that "NILKON" is" Velaj" and "Velaj" is "NILKON". The deep feelings and overwhelming impressions you get when you meet this man and deal with him is just exactly the same when you read this fabulous book, which perfectly reflects and clarifies how truthful, honest and talented this man is.

Good Work and Good luck, Velaj, just keep going up, the future is all yours.
